Lingo Provides Update on STIR/SHAKEN Technology

By Stefania Viscusi

Spam phone calls have increased to alarming rates. As a result, most consumers and businesses have been dealing with an inundated number of calls today that are not only unwanted, but also tricky to decipher if they are coming from scammers.

This is all thanks to caller ID spoofing - where a legitimate phone number and name of a business will be spoofed to appear on the caller ID and as if it’s originating from the actual company. Unknowingly, many spam calls are making their way past blockers, and even fooling unsuspecting victims into further financial loss.

To join in the fight to end spam calling, Lingo Communications, a Cloud/UC and managed service provider has been working on a new technology “STIR/SHAKEN” to combat these calls.

The company now announced that as of June 30, 2021, the new offering has been completely implemented into its IP network and that it has now also filed to complete certification with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for the technology.

"As a trusted communications partner, Lingo and its carrier division, Impact Telecom, implemented STIR/SHAKEN to help protect customers against malicious spoofed calls and help law enforcement track bad actors," said Joseph Haines, VP Engineering and Operations. As a leading Cloud/UC, managed services and carrier provider, "We are proud to be contributing to the nationwide effort to put an end to an illegal activity that costs consumers, businesses and governments billions of dollars annually.”

The STIR/SHAKEN technology works by verifying a caller ID using Robocall Mitigation to authenticate the voice traffic. Valid information is passed between providers and informs Robocall blocking tools whenever a suspicious call is trying to make its way through.

With this latest announcement, all voice traffic originating on the companies IP network will be run through the STIR/SHAKEN technology - even calls received via SIP or from its CPaaS platform.

"STIR/SHAKEN along with Lingo's other solutions allow downstream carriers to better distinguish between legitimate and unlawful traffic, promoting the ability of all our commercial, carrier and consumer customers to reach those people they need to reach," said Patrick Reilly, VP Carrier Services. Whether our customers are using our IP network services or our CPaaS (Communications Platform as a Service) services, they are now protected from abuse and fraud.
