flexiWAN Ushers in Second Wave with Open Source SD-WAN Beta

By Maurice Nagle

Last year at ITEXPO we invited you to ride the wave of digital transformation, and you did, but that was only the first barrage, as the second wave of solutions are coming and you should be excited.

flexiWAN announces the flexiWAN open architecture and open source SD-WAN software is now generally available. Firms can choose to download the software-only version or appliance on dedicated hardware to deploy flexiWAN 0.1 and in doing serve as enterprise and Proof of Concept (POC) deployments.

Easily installed on bare metal, dedicated hardware, cloud platform or virtual machine the beta releases packs some power. The release features capabilities like automatic tunnel creation between sites, Ethernet interface support, flexible user-controlled network topologies, support for cloud and physical components and offers certified hardware and optimization.

The second wave of SD-WAN is here, and its moving away from vendor lock in with an open architecture, open source model. flexiWAN reports nearly a 1,000 telcos, Sis, MSPs and enterprises contacted the provider to learn more and or conduct POCs since the solution was first announced in the spring.

Silicom served as a key partner in putting this solution set together providing the dedicated hardware to support onsite deployment and those firms not quite ready for full cloud migration.

“Our use of Silicom as a hardware partner enables us to provide a turnkey solution which will allow enterprises and service providers to quickly deploy and on-board flexiWAN for their customers and to solve all the logistics of HW handling,” commented Amir Zmora, CEO and co-founder of flexiWAN. “We found it easy to on-board flexiWAN onto the Silicom hardware device and to integrate it with our system.”

It’s no surprise the next step for SD-WAN is open source, as it may be time to democratize this technology. The cloud era is not an optional proposition, neither is network modernization.

What’s in your WAN?
