Axiom Fiber Outlines Big Plans for the Big Apple

By Rory J. Thompson

One of the fastest growing areas in the technology world is Dark Fiber, and a new company that entered the arena this past January is already making a splash.

Axiom Fiber Networks, a telecommunications infrastructure services provider operating in the greater New York City metro region, launched under the leadership of telecom industry veteran Felipe J. Alvarez. The company is offering dark fiber services and custom solutions to enterprise and carrier customers, providing high-count fiber routes between key traffic interexchanges in Manhattan. Axiom’s core network operates within striking distance of every building in midtown and lower Manhattan.

MSPToday caught up with Alvarez at the recent Telecom Exchange New York 2015 conference. TMC Group Editorial Director Erik Linask was able to spend a few minutes with Alvarez to ask how the company was doing and where it was headed. Alvarez began by describing what the company has been up to in recent months.

“We have about eight miles worth of high-dense-count fiber already laid in New York City,” he said. “The latest thing we’ve done is connect all seven major carrier hotels; they’ll be fully operational in August of this year. From there, we’re building out the network into midtown Manhattan and then going south toward the financial sector.”

Axiom knows it’s not alone in the field, so Alvarez was asked what sets his company apart from the competition.

“The key thing is service-focus, which means a lot of things,” he said. “It means that we have a managed dark fiber service. This means we actively monitor the cables. It’s also about business flexibility: how flexible are we in delivering a business condition to meet a customer requirement?”

Looking ahead, Alvarez noted that the small cell market will mean big things for his company. “A large chunk of the business over the next three years will come from that. I’ve heard numbers like tens of thousands of small cell deployments in New York City alone.”

That translates into big money for this nascent company. Watch the video below to see more of this insightful interview and hear what it portends for the dark fiber industry.
