Singtel and Viptela Team on Managed Software-Defined WAN Service

By Laura Stotler

A new managed services partnership has been announced to provide a software-defined WAN (SD-WAN) service to customers throughout the world. Singtel and Viptela have teamed up to offer Singtel’s ConnectPlus service in the Asia-Pacific region as well as Australia, Europe and the US.

The SD-WAN service will be delivered using Viptela’s Secure Extensible Network platform, which enables customers to unify disparate networks while also centralizing management and securing and simplifying infrastructure. Several production and production-pilot deployments of the service are already in place with multiple enterprises.

Software defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) are driving massive changes in the networking and service provider markets, particularly when it comes to WANs. Analysis from the Rayno Report forecasts the enterprise SD-WAN market will reach $7.5 billion by 2020, driven by anticipated cost savings, efficiencies and performance improvements.

Viptela’s platform aims to delivery those benefits, providing application-aware networking to help enterprises optimize app performance while realizing increased efficiencies. In combination with Singtel’s SD-WAN service, networks may be programmed dynamically and securely without impacting performance.

"Demand for hybrid WAN services is growing rapidly, since companies are looking to unify their disparate transport networks and enable a common, secure service across them," said Amir Khan, CEO of Viptela. "The ability of the Viptela platform to integrate seamlessly and incrementally with existing networks enables Singtel ConnectPlus SD-WAN to deliver any combination of IP VPN, private line and Internet services to any of their customer locations, which can be centrally managed by them."

Features of the joint offering include the ability to disaggregate services from the physical network and build a single overlay WAN. The offering also provides end-to-end encryption and authentication at multiple locations and can centrally create, control and enforce policies throughout the entire network. Additional benefits include the ability to segment networks granularly to support separate lines for business, partner networks and more. Network visibility and operations are also improved through increased agility and performance.

"With this innovative service, businesses can take full advantage of hybrid networks through a centralized management console hosted on the Singtel cloud,” said Lee Han Kheng, vice president of global products at Singtel Group Enterprise. “They will have real-time control over network issues such as performance, bandwidth utilization and security."
