Bright House Deploys Cisco NCS Solution to Offer Cloud-based Managed Services

By Laura Stotler

An expanded partnership with Cisco will enable Bright House Networks to offer managed security services as well as network transport, Wi-Fi and traditional voice and data services. The company has deployed the Cisco Network Convergence System (NCS) in a bid to better serve its enterprise customers with a variety of cloud-based managed services.

The NCS network fabric provides the foundation for scalable and more adaptable Internet solutions, enabling Bright House to offer hosted voice, call center and application services in addition to IaaS. The service provider will be deploying the Cisco NCS 6000, including a one Tbps line card that can transport up to five Tbps per slot for a total system capacity of a whopping 1.2 petabits per second (Pbps).

Bright House and Cisco already have a longstanding partnership, with Bright House achieving Cisco Master Service Provider Certification through the company’s Cloud and Managed Service Program. The certification is granted through a third-party audit process to companies capable of selling and delivering cloud and managed services built on Cisco solutions with the goal of helping customers accelerate time to market and time to revenue.

"Our continued collaboration with Cisco allows us to be one of the first cable operators in the United States to offer comprehensive, world-class, cloud-based services to businesses and consumers,” said Craig Cowden, chief network officer and senior vice president of enterprise solutions at Bright House. “Working with Cisco will help us to quickly bring new business and residential services to market faster and perform in-service software upgrades without any downtime or service interruption or degradation." ?

Global IP traffic is expected to triple in volume during the next five years, making more efficient virtualized network creation and programming critical for MSPs. Cisco’s NCS 6000 is part of the larger Cisco Evolved Programmable Network, which will enable Bright House to handle growing network traffic as well as better program and manage a vastly increasing number of device-driven events. The NCS 6000 works in tandem with Cisco’s Carrier Routing System (CRS) and the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Routers to form a network fabric foundation. This interconnects the Bright House architecture while also enabling scalability up to petabytes, agility for advanced virtualization programming and a variety of efficiencies.

According to Cisco, MSPs may reduce their total cost of ownership by as much as 45 percent and consume up to 60 percent less power using the broader Cisco Open Networking Environment (ONE). This service provider architecture extends software-defined networking (SDN) as well as network functions virtualization (NFV) and is part of the Cisco Evolved Services Platform.

"With our widely Evolved Programmable Network solutions for converged networks, we are now able to deliver software-defined networking and network functions virtualization innovations that accelerate new business possibilities for Bright House Networks,” said Bill Gartner, vice president and general manager, High-End Routing and Optical Group, Cisco. “We are pleased to have met Bright House Networks' expectations in a short period of time, giving them the ability to optimize and monetize their network through carrier-class, cloud-based and managed services for businesses and consumers."
