Fujitsu has announced that it had partnered with MongoDB to develop a cloud-based solution using its RunMyProcess platform. The collaboration is the latest in a series of moves by Fujitsu to push its cloud products.
MongoDB is an open source, NoSQL database developed by New York City-based MongoDB, Inc. NoSQL databases were developed to address the shortcomings of traditional SQL/relational databases.
Traditional SQL databases lend themselves well to storing and retrieving structured data consisting of character strings, dates and various numeric formats. They fall short however, when it comes to retrieving unstructured data like audio, video, images and documents because of the format of the data and its overwhelming size. Another disadvantage of relational databases is that their structure conflicts with how many businesses function, forcing them to adapt to the database system instead of the other way around.
NoSQL databases support these unstructured types, making them well-suited for big data operations. The term, ‘NoSQL’ is a bit of a misnomer as some NoSQL databases, like Apache’s Cassandra, support a query language. The term ‘not only SQL’ is a more accurate description of these databases’ functionality.
In April 2013, Fujitsu acquired RunMyProcess, a French company that developed a cloud-based workflow platform-as-a service (PaaS) product also known as RunMyProcess. It allowed customers to create customized workflows and integrate with other popular products like Google Apps.
Fujitsu and MongoDB joining forces is a reflection of how much IT has changed, and it goes far beyond the benefits of NoSQL databases.
It has radically changed the software development cycle. The old way of developing in-house software has given way to a faster, newer way of development. The long cycle of gathering requirements, making specifications, developing and testing software has been replaced by more agile techniques that lead to more frequent (sometimes daily) software releases. RunMyProcess users can quickly build and deploy applications with simple drag-and-drop interfaces.
As a behemoth that generated $47 billion in 2013 revenues, Fujitsu has the resources to make a huge dent in the cloud market. Its acquisition of RunMyProcess makes it possible for Fujitsu to offer powerful solutions that many businesses are already using.
