HubiC Offers Highly Competitive Prices, Plans Compared to Rival Firms

By Ed Silverstein

Dropbox has some serious competition. OVH, a hosting company from France, is now offering 10 TB for $13.50 a month with its HubiC option for cloud storage. Compare that option with Dropbox, for instance, which offers 100 GB (1 TB equals 1,000 GB) for $10 a month.

Also, still another option from HubiC provides 25GB of storage for free, or the company can provide its users 100GB for $1.35 a month.

In addition, HubiC features an API, desktop syncing and mobile apps. HubiC apps work with many different operating systems, including those for Windows, OS X, iOS, Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, and they will soon add Linux after a Beta test.

Yet, not every feature is present with HubiC. “HubiC lacks some features that you might miss if you make the switch: selective synchronization, for example,” Geek.com said.

But the prices and storage plans appear to be winners for the time being. Look at the other rivals. SkyDrive charges $50 a year for 100GB. Google provides 8TB for $400 a month, according to news reports.

Looking ahead on the future pricing structure, TechCrunch said, “It’s not clear whether HubiC will be able to maintain the 10TB plan in the long run, but you can cancel any time.”

Why can the costs be lower with HubiC? TechCrunch said HubiC uses its own server infrastructure and data centers rather than Amazon services, so operating costs are lower.

An added plus, for users concerned about U.S. government surveillance, HubiC “does not fall under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Patriot Act” – which means more privacy, according to Geek.com.

In other related news, OVH has launched three new dedicated servers which target mature markets and emerging markets, and meet the needs of such groups as students, large companies, small- and medium-sized businesses, and startups.
