New Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.3 Includes On-ramp to OpenStack to Bridge Datacenters and the Cloud

By Laura Stotler

In major news for datacenter virtualization and management within cloud environments, Red Hat Inc. has made its Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV) 3.3 solution globally available. The offering helps provide traditional datacenter virtualization with an on-ramp to OpenStack services, and the latest version features expanded management as well as seamless workload scaling and integration.

The on-ramp to OpenStack is a key feature of Red Hat’s offering, as it enables enterprises to deploy both traditional and elastic workloads on their existing infrastructure without any change in service levels, performance or scalability. Customers may deploy a common set of OpenStack services in the new version, including compute, storage and networking.

Services may be used by customers’ datacenter virtualization platforms via the solution, or through a private cloud via the Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform. That bridge between the cloud and the datacenter gives organizations the freedom to deploy a variety of workloads without the need to duplicate infrastructure layers.

"Red Hat's consistent improvements to the open KVM hypervisor and its concurrent virtualization management offerings now allow more customers to take control of their datacenters and build individualized paths to a private cloud infrastructure,” said Radhesh Balakrishnan, general manager, virtualization and OpenStack, Red Hat. “With new additions to the third-party plug-ins offered by Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.3, it offers a fundamental core for Red Hat's OpenStack-powered cloud offerings."

New features in the latest release include a self-hosted engine that enables the RHEV manager to be deployed as a VM on the host, to reduce hardware requirements. A new backup infrastructure also offers an API set so third-party software vendors may back up and restore their VMs. The solution also supports OpenStack Glance and OpenStack Neutron, which allow users to store their VM templates as well as enable advanced networking configurations, with infrastructure shared among private clouds and datacenter virtualization.

The release also has a number of fully supported third-party plug-ins, including the HP Insight Control Plug-In for simplifying operations and gleaning actionable insight on underlying HP hardware. The NetApp Virtual Console for RHEV enables rapid cloning of NetApp VMs as well as NFS storage discovery, provisioning and modification from within the RHEV Manager. And the Symantec Veritas Cluster Server plug-in offers automated disaster recovery functionality as well as application-specific fail-over.

"The release of Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.3 represents a significant step in open source virtualization that can easily and rapidly be deployed on HP's ConvergedSystem for Virtualization for a balanced system supporting a variety of application environments,” said Scott Shaffer, director servers platform software, HP Enterprise Group. “As a complementary solution, HP's Insight Control for Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization offers direct integration of the RHEV-M console with HP ProLiant, decreasing costs and datacenter complexity by providing a comprehensive view to manage and monitor both physical and virtual environments."
