QTS Continues MSP Surge

QTS Continues MSP Surge

By Doug Barney

QTS Realty Trust doesn’t sound like the name of a data center and managed services provider, but it is truly is a burgeoning cloud outfit. QTS hooked up with what it says is one of the world’s biggest Internet companies to expand their data center cooperation. QTS declined to name its partner. The Internet partner is based in California, but using QTS to expand its footprint into the Atlanta area.

The Internet company began its QTS deployment last week year and the build out will continue into next year based on a recently struck deal. “The new agreement will significantly expand their commitment by adding five megawatts of power, representing over a 25 percent increase, and additional space in excess of 25,000 square feet starting in 2015,” the company said.

QTS has been on a ten year roll, starting out with just one data center in Overland Park, Kansas.

Now QTS has 10 data centers running in seven states, all totaling some 3.8 million square feet of data center space. These centers all together handle some 875 customers. Not all the growth has been organic. QTS has also bought its way into a bigger footprint. In 2005, QTS bought a 370,000 square foot data center neat Atlanta, and a short year later bought nearly a million square feet more in Atlanta. Later QTS added a 100,000 square foot facility in New Jersey, and six years ago bought 135,000 square feet in Santa Clara. Not just that, five years ago QTS bought a 1.3 million square foot operation in Richmond, VA.

Hotlanta

QTS with all its acquisitions is a major player in the Atlanta market, a market QTS believes brings new meaning to the term Hotlanta. Today QTS have nearly 1 million square feet of Atlanta area data center infrastructure, and thinks it can expands its area capacity by nearly a third.

“The quality of our national platform and the scale of our facilities throughout our portfolio is what allows our customers to continue to grow with us,” said James Reinhart, chief operating officer, operations and development QTS. “Our ability to expand customer relationships is a result of our commitment to a premium customer experience and the value we deliver every day.”
