Mega Data Centers in Asia-Pacific Create Opportunities for Infrastructure Management Vendors

By Laura Stotler

The Asia-Pacific region is home to megacities and mega populations, so it’s no surprise that mega data centers are starting to turn up there as well. A new study from Frost & Sullivan shows that colocation services are driving construction of giant data centers throughout the region and thereby creating increased demand for custom and scalable infrastructure solutions.

The study, from the Data Center Infrastructure Solutions Market program at Frost & Sullivan, finds that the massive scale of these mega data centers is creating a pressing need to control rack level energy consumption as well as cut down on operational costs. That in turn will shift the focus from power and cooling equipment to more comprehensive infrastructure solution offerings.

Frost & Sullivan finds that the increasing importance of data center infrastructure software and services for keeping down costs will take precedence over the sale of standalone power and cooling units. Infrastructure solutions include data center infrastructure management (DCIM) offerings as well as after-sales support services.

"Faced with an uncertain economy and ever-increasing demand for consistent and improved network services, data center operators are struggling to maximize both network uptime and profitability," said Amit Singh, analyst for Frost & Sullivan Energy & Environmental Research. "This presents an opportunity for solution providers to empower data center operators with modular, cost-effective data center infrastructure solutions that meet requirements for efficiency, network reliability, and performance."

Singh added that major opportunities are opening up for vendors who make direct contracts with medium and large-sized data centers. System integrators and after-sales service vendors are also an important part of the partnership process while helping to build a local value chain for data center operators. Creating the correct partnerships while offering innovative infrastructure management solutions is expected to open many doors for solution vendor in the Asia-Pacific region.
