Dell SecureWorks Locks Down Virtual, Physical and Cloud Servers

By Doug Barney

Dell SecureWorks broadened its array of services this week with Service Protection Services, which leverages technology from Trend Micro to batten down the hatches on virtual, physical and cloud servers. Many shops, and certainly service providers, likely have all three.

The tool is designed as an all-in-one, not just because it protects three kinds of servers, but because it offers four main types of security, anti-malware, firewall, Intrusion Protection System and Intrusion Detection System (IDS/IPS).

On the management side, Dell offers technicians from its Global Information Assurance Certification (GIAC) who can oversee the network, analyzing, monitoring and fixing any problems that crop up. This Monitored Server Protection Service offers round the clock monitoring and a customer portal. Early next year a more managed solution, Managed Server Protection Solution, will add to the prior list as hosted management console, health management and the ability to create and manage policies.

“Cyber-attacks are becoming more sophisticated every day so it’s imperative for organizations to adopt a multi-layer protection strategy for their high-value servers,” said Dan DeRosa, director of product management at Dell SecureWorks. “Our Incident Response experts and Counter Threat Unit (CTU) researchers continually investigate breaches where hackers use a small entry point to infiltrate a company’s network and access critical servers. The Server Protection Services, powered by threat context from our incident response and research team, provides a strong security posture.”

 Dell Buys In

The new server protection services come way of Trend Micro. SecureWorks itself came by way of the acquisition of the eponymously named company – SecureWorks.

Shortly after the buy, Gartner graced the now Dell subsidiary by choosing SecureWorks as the top Managed Security Services Provider (MSSP) to watch in the research house’s “Market Trends: Managed Security Services, Worldwide, 2013” report.

“Enterprise buyers have recognized that various traditional security technologies based on signature match have become increasingly commoditized while newly emerging technologies to address these more advanced threats are gaining traction in the market,” Gartner said. “During Gartner interviews, several MSSPs have indicated plans to announce advanced threat protection appliances into their management and monitoring services portfolios while others have already announced support. Additionally, the specific MSS capabilities for analyzing large customer event datasets to identify key events, trends, behaviors or patterns, and develop threat countermeasures, will be key to whether MSSPs are relevant in future targeted attack conversations.” SecureWorks does device management, security monitoring, log management and scanning.

 Dell’s MSP Play

Dell is certainly no stranger to the MSP space, having served them for years as partners. And nearly six years ago, Dell literally bought its way into the space when it acquired SilverBack Technologies, Inc.

SilverBack was focused on remote management for networks, applications and systems. Silverback had an incredibly rich set of services, especially at that point in the market. Here’s what is offered:

Managing and monitoring storage, networks, servers, notebooks and desktops.

Solid “patch management and deployment, remote access, remote scripting, software distribution, file transfer, and desktop management solutions; and monitoring solutions, such as proactive monitoring, event management, security monitoring, knowledge base, dashboard, and alert management solutions.”

On the reports front, SilverBack had “executive reports, performance scorecards, security scorecards, monthly service reports, technical reports, and long-term trending reports and hosted packages, including monitoring licenses, patch scanning and deployment, vulnerability scanning, reporting, remediation, product training, sales and marketing assistance, and maintenance and support.”
