SolarWinds Invests in AppNeta with Plans to Combine Cloud-Based APM and Infrastructure Management

By Laura Stotler

AppNeta and SolarWinds have teamed up in an effort to connect IT infrastructure to application delivery, with the goal of improving the performance and value of business applications. The partnership will expand AppNeta’s cloud-based application performance management (APM) solutions through an investment from SolarWinds for an undisclosed amount.

SolarWinds is a provider of IT management solutions with more than 150,000 customers throughout the world. The company strives to enable better management of performance and availability of the entire IT infrastructure, including networks, systems, virtualization, storage and databases. AppNeta’s cloud-based APM offerings provide full stack visibility of applications, from code to distributed networks to end user devices.

Both companies are hoping to better serve their customers through the partnership. By combining the infrastructure and application development markets and offering more insight into the overall performance of applications, they look to help their customers achieve exceptional application delivery.

According to Gartner, IT organizations are facing new management challenges as developers build and deliver applications on private and public clouds. The traditionally siloed application and network teams need to work together more closely so that organizations may understand specific performance requirements for apps.

IDC forecasts the APM software market will surpass $3.5 billion by 2016, with a steady CAGR of 12.7 percent from 2011 to 2016.

"The worldwide APM software market is growing much more quickly than most system infrastructure software markets because of the impact of mobile applications, cloud, and SaaS delivery options," said Mary Johnston Turner, IDC research vice president, Enterprise Systems Management Software.

"We see a number of parallels between SolarWinds' model for IT infrastructure management software and AppNeta's leadership in APM 3.0 - purpose-built solutions that are designed to appeal to a highly technical user,” said Kevin Thompson, president and CEO of SolarWinds. “In both cases, our companies are helping users to navigate a rapidly-evolving landscape through intuitive technology."
