Travis County Chooses CyrusOne's Austin Colocation Facility to House Production Environment

By Laura Stotler

Colocations and cloud hosting provider CyrusOne has snagged a large municipal customer at its newest Austin, Texas data center. Travis County Information Technology Services (ITS), which supports 43 county departments and 20 lines of business, has chosen the provider to house its production data center environment.

The Austin Met Center II site is hosting the county equipment, which had previously been located in an antiquated basement site. The county operations were at risk of system failures with the previous setup, putting many day-to-day routine operations in jeopardy.

Travis County was also running out of physical space to house its IT equipment, and was looking to process and store growing volumes of data. By migrating to CyrusOne’s facility, the county has increased its bandwidth and has set up better redundancy for network connections, not to mention utilizing a safer and more secure location.

CyrusOne has had a busy few months, signing CINgroup at its North Cincinnati facility in September for disaster recovery, colocation and other services. The company delivers workflow and due diligence products to more than 10,000 law firms. And CyrusOne also announced a managed services partnership with Optic IP in August, giving their Phoenix data center customers access to new managed services. Optic IP provides comprehensive IT services and migration plan development as well as cloud and storage solutions.

"Letting an experienced provider like CyrusOne manage facility-related areas such as heating, cooling, power, and physical security enables me and my team to focus on operating the county's IT infrastructure,” said Walter LaGrone, IT operations director for Travis County on choosing CyrusOne. “By freeing us from data center operations, we can now more efficiently deliver the service and quality that Travis County constituents require."

As a CyrusOne customer, Travis County ITS has access to the provider’s National Internet Exchange (IX), providing low-cost connectivity with its massively scaled data centers. The company’s facilities in Dallas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio and Phoenix are all linked through the program. CyrusOne operates a total of 25 carrier-neutral facilities in the U.S., Europe and Asia. Data centers are built on a 2N architecture for high power redundancy and feature a power-dense infrastructure for high availability.
