VDI Market Not Shy on Choice

VDI Market Not Shy on Choice

By Doug Barney

On the heels of VMware buying Desktone, Virtual Bridges rolled out a new version of its VDI tool. Like Desktone, Virtual Bridges aims its VDI tool at service providers such as MSPs as well as enterprises and, like Desktone, comes with strong, built-in multi-tenant support.

VERDE 7 is the latest Virtual Bridge virtual desktop tool, and now features network controls and role-based access.

The software also supports not just Windows, but Linux desktops as well (not that there are a lot of those lying around).

Like VMware’s comments when it bought Desktone, Virtual Bridges believes the move to mobile workforce along with the BYOD explosion is driving demand for virtual desktops.

One VDI customers did an eval and Virtual Bridges came out on top.

“After vetting several virtual desktop platforms, it’s clear that Virtual Bridges is the only solution that is flexible enough to support both single client and multi-tenant client scenarios across a range of mixed-platform environments,” said Tim Kirsch, executive vice president at TurnKey Internet. “Our deployment was seamless and the solution undoubtedly outperformed all others that we tested. In addition, the price point offers incredible value for both partners and customers.”

Virtual Bridges, now seven years old, has an array of technology partners, including IBM, Rackspace and Raytheon. It counts as customers the County of Honolulu, Northrop Grumman, Panasonic, and the U.S. Department of Defense.

Virtual Bridges is taking particular aim at MSPs. “With the news of VMware’s acquisition of Desktone, many MSPs are rightfully concerned about their DaaS offerings, including potential price increases that impact margins; integration challenges that are consistent with VMware; and an overall lack of focus on DaaS now that Desktone is being absorbed into the network virtualization giant,” said Jon Senger, chief strategy officer at Virtual Bridges. “We invite all MSPs that are interested in exploring other options to contact us today for a free evaluation of VERDE 7. We’re confident we can offer the most robust features while allowing MSPs to get the ROI they desire.”

What’s New

VERDE 7 has a bevy of new features besides multi-tenancy and role based access, such as support for Linux dual monitors, and broader client support including Android, iOS, Mac OS X, Linux, thin clients, as well as Windows XP, 7 and 8.

VDI Market Movement

The VDI market is clearly on the move. TechNavio believes the worldwide market for cloud-based VDI will grow at a 30.6 percent CAGR over the next three years, in large part because IT wants to lower the costs of desktop infrastructure, as well and the growth of handheld devices.

The Taneja Group tends to agree. “At Taneja Group we think this next year will show a real uptick in VDI adoption fueled by practical, cost-efficient offerings that truly provide enterprise class functionality at scale. Virtual Bridges VERDE 7 with built-in multi-tenancy features, efficient storage scaling, and broad multi-platform capability, now including support for developer-quality multi-monitor Linux and a wide range of mobile devices, looks to challenge the largest VDI vendors in MSPs and large enterprise private clouds,” said Mike Matchett, senior analyst and consultant at Taneja.
