AT&T Scores 2nd Major Federal Contract of the Month, Worth $31M

By Laura Stotler

AT&T will be providing managed virtual private network (VPN) services to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), in a contract worth up to $31 million. The work was awarded to AT&T's federal government unit, which will provide services to 93 HUD sites throughout the country.

The company will also provide Managed Trusted Internet Protocol Service (MTIPS) to HUD, which will enable the agency to securely connect to the public Internet. The contract was the second major federal government win for AT&T this month, since the company was also awarded two major managed services contracts by the USPS.

The latest contracts were awarded through the Networx procurement vehicle. The program, run by the U.S. General Services Administration, outsources federal telecom services in an effort to provide the latest technologies, best industry partners and greatest efficiencies for federal government agencies. The goal is to enable agencies to use their resources to build secure and seamless operating environments.

The AT&T contract is part of HUD's push toward network modernization as the agency transitions away from an outdated frame relay network. HUD is moving toward a managed VPN network to support HUD employees and operations throughout the country.

"AT&T looks forward to supporting the Department of Housing and Urban Development by delivering a proven solution that enables the agency to communicate quickly, reliably and efficiently, both in terms of internal operations and in its ongoing, external mission to serve citizens," said Kay Kapoor, president, AT&T's Federal Government business unit.

The Federal Government business unit of AT&T serves a number of government agencies and customers. In addition to managed services, the unit provides voice, data and video solutions and specializes in cyber security, network and application solutions and mission support.
