Storage Pricing War Sees More Shots Fired: Is Per GB Backup Pricing Dead?

There are so many vendors in the cloud storage market, it is sometimes hard to differentiate your technology. But dramatic pricing is an easier way to stand out.

Asigra learned this, or perhaps taught this, when it moved its pricing away from an emphasis on backup volumes and towards the amount of data restored.

Now MSP vendor Zenith Infotech is mixing up its pricing as it announces a revamp of its backup and recovery portfolio which is offered as Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS).

The new scheme, which is not based on per GB backup pricing, is aimed at nabbing more service providers such as MSPs who can pass along low prices to clients. “Service providers are constantly evaluating the advantages and challenges of onsite devices vs. cloud services, particularly in backup and disaster recovery,” explained Zenith CEO Akash Saraf. "Zenith DRaaS provides a hybrid approach. But where we're really changing the game is with the cloud portion. We charge one price for an offsite vault with expandable shared storage to dramatically lower a partner's costs. The era of per-GB pricing is at an end at Zenith."

The whole idea is to have affordable monthly fees for the on-premises storage devices. MSPs and other partners also contract with Zenith to rent a BDR-G14 Vault that is hosted by Zenith and which can copy that data to more than two dozen local devices. This price is the same no matter whether the MSP replicates to one or 25 local appliances. And this means that the price doesn’t go up as more data is stored.

“Offsite storage rates seem low on paper. But as GBs turn into TBs, the cost snowballs. With stable Vault pricing, our partners can increase their revenues without increasing their expenses,” Saraf argued.

Zenith, not to be confused with the old hardware and kit company, is a 17-year-old vendor that aims at MSPs and now has back office solutions for the cloud.

StorageCraft Connection

Interestingly, the new Zenith DRaaS lineup uses technology from StorageCraft, which is currently offering discounts, contributing its part to the cloud storage pricing war.

Zenith’s new BDR-G14 uses StorageCraft ShadowProtect 5.x.

StorageCraft is hoping to snag a few deals with a 30 percent off offer for devices supporting StorageCraft Cloud Services.

MSPs have to hurry though; deal is only good through the end of September.
