Airfibre Offers Cloud-based Next-Gen Firewall from Palo Alto Networks

By Laura Stotler

A new partnership agreement has been announced by Airfibre, an Irish and U.K. provider of wireless leased lines built on high-rise point of presence (POP) sites. The company is teaming up with distributor The NextGen Group to provide the cloud-based Next-Generation Firewall from Palo Alto Networks in Ireland.

The firewall services are designed for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and offer enterprise-grade capabilities without the need for expensive hardware. The managed enterprise security service is cloud-based to protect investments in last-mile Internet leased-line services.

By operating the firewall within the cloud, users benefit from protection from attacks on customer resources, since malicious activity is cut off inside the cloud. Airfibre adds that one of the downsides to placing firewalls at the edge of customer premises is potential bandwidth reduction, since an external firewall opens up customers to hostile attacks on last-mile bandwidth.

"The traditional route to firewall security is to install dedicated hardware at a client facility, but there are many drawbacks, not least of which is keeping the firewall up to date," said John Earley, CEO of Airfibre. "It is also a physical object and can suffer regular hardware failure quite outside of attack or incursions."

The company is offering the new service with a monthly billing scheme that includes remote support. This lets customers spread out security costs and also ensures the Airfibre Enterprise Security service is cheaper than in-house solutions.

"It suits our customers perfectly," added Earley. "They do not have to invest in expensive hardware to avail of this service but can access the enterprise-strength security solution through the cloud and on a monthly fee."
