For Those Who Demand Ethernet, tw telecom Brings You Ethernet on Demand

By Doug Barney

tw telecom already offers Business Ethernet as a managed service, along with IP VPN and converged services.

The provider this week announced a new level in on-demand Ethernet: Alerts Driven Dynamic Capacity. This new service offers Ethernet bandwidth in real-time and in an automated fashion – you don’t even have to know you need the extra bandwidth to get it.

IT or network managers set “bandwidth utilization thresholds” and when your system requires it bandwidth can be automatically doubled or tripled – up to 10GB.

The Alerts Driven Dynamic Capacity is a part of the vendors Intelligent Network, a network that lets enterprises control network use and offers visibility into what is happening on that net.

“Our Alerts Driven feature takes our previously introduced Dynamic Capacity to the next level by providing customers with automatic linkages between network performance visibility and system-driven increased bandwidth that reflects what we believe is the future for enterprises – which is greater and greater automation of the network,” said tw telecom COO John Blount.

“It provides businesses across industries, like health care, financial, and education, with the ability to significantly enhance network performance during times of peak use, leading to increased efficiency and capability, and then returning to the originally committed network bandwidth at the conclusion of the event.”

One analyst believes these types of services are critical in a world shaped by high and fluctuating demand for networked applications. “To support the rapid proliferation of networked business applications, IT professionals increasingly need better real time visibility and control of their networks,” said Erin Dunne, director of research services for Vertical Systems Group.  “A significant challenge is how to efficiently manage network bandwidth in response to new Cloud apps or changes in existing applications. tw telecom addresses these needs with its Intelligent Network capabilities. Specifically, Dynamic Capacity is a unique capability that enables CIOs to look into their network metrics in real time and then allocate Ethernet bandwidth on-demand.”

tw telecom One Active MSP

MSP Today has been put to the test trying to keep up with tw telecom. The biggest news this year is prepping new services and increasing capacity.

Recently tw telecom announced an expanded footprint using two partners.

First up is network-dense data center provider CoreSite Realty Corporation. CoreSite says its deal with tw telecom means new services and better performance.

In particular, CoreSite’s Cloud Exchange can now leverage Business Ethernet services from tw telecom, allowing customer to access the CoreSite services over high speed Ethernet.

These connections should offer guaranteed and safe and reliable bandwidth.

Now that the infrastructure is in place, the two plan to add automation and provide separate services, cloud exchange, APIs and network services through a single integrated solution.

And tw telecom is building up its presence in the North Carolina region with a new deal with Sentinel Data Centers. tw telecom is taking its network right into the Sentinel NC1 data center boosting Sentinel’s ability to offer Ethernet and other services.

A New Constellation is Born

Work with partners such as CoreSite is helping set the stage for tw telecom’s upcoming Constellation Platform. In fact the company plans on showing off the Constellation prototype soon in New York City.

Constellation is really about automation, allowing clients to provision new connections and shift data center loads more quickly and easily.
