GigaSpaces' Cloudify Platform Eases Transition to OpenStack Clouds

By Erin Harrison

Enterprises and independent software vendors (ISVs) now have access to a platform that is designed to help them more quickly transition to OpenStack clouds, thanks to GigaSpaces Technologies’ new Cloudify platform.

GigaSpaces Technologies, which provides next generation application and cloud enablement platforms, is offering Cloudify as a free and open source application management platform that allows enterprises to gradually move their applications onto their new OpenStack environments with increased agility and reduced risk, according to Mark Collier, COO of OpenStack Foundation.

“Enabling businesses to build and move applications to OpenStack clouds is critical, and open source solutions like Cloudify make it easier for developers to deploy and manage those applications across OpenStack environments,” Collier said in a statement.

Cloudify is an open source framework for deploying, managing and scaling applications on a cloud environment. The platform also helps maintain interoperability with existing infrastructures, across different OpenStack and other cloud providers.

In the area of cloud for enterprises, GigaSpaces has decided to focus its positioning on OpenStack clouds, specifically in building software middleware for simplifying the deployment, management and scaling of any application.

As OpenStack approaches its third birthday, enterprises and ISVs need to be prepared for a continuously changing environment and be able to port their applications across different OpenStack providers and versions as needed, according to Nati Shalom, CTO of GigaSpaces Technologies.

“The open source and community adoption nature of OpenStack enables us to do things that are unique to OpenStack,” Shalom said. “We have begun working with major customers in the investment banking and telecom industries, as well as with partners, such as IBM, HP and Alcatel-Lucent, to add native OpenStack and multi-cloud support.”

With Cloudify, applications are “future-proofed” with the ability to withstand change without compromising on productivity, availability and interoperability, Shalom added.

Using “application recipes,” Cloudify automates the setup, deploy, monitor, auto-repair and scale processes of mission-critical and big data applications on public and private clouds, without requiring architectural or code changes.

Company officials said the next major releases of Cloudify will introduce new depths to the platform's integration with OpenStack, specifically in the areas of Heat (the OpenStack infrastructure orchestration project), Cinder (OpenStack’s block storage project) and the OpenStack networking project.
