NetGain Gathers SOC 2 Cert, Accountants Everywhere Applaud

By Doug Barney

NetGain, an IT solutions outfit, now has full Service Organization Controls (SOC) 2 certification.

So why should anyone care about SOC 2? A standard promulgated by The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), SOC 2 is an extension of the SSAE 16 certification. Where SSAE revolves around financial controls and compliance, SOC 2 revolves around non-financial controls, such as privacy and confidentiality, availability and security.

SOC 2 is based on four Trust Service Principles: Communications, Policies, Procedures and Modeling, according to SSAE-16.com.

“Each of the principles have defined criteria (controls) which must be met to demonstrate adherence to the principles and produce an unqualified opinion (no significant exceptions found during your audit). The great thing about the trust principles is that the criteria businesses must meet are predefined, making it easier for business owners to know what compliance needs are required and for users of the report to read and assess the adequacy,” the AICPA site explained.

SOC 2, a follow-up to SOC 1, is a relatively new accomplishment. SOC 2, at least in part, was in response to the move to SaaS and other hosted services, and the need to secure these new approaches.

“When the new standards for SOC 2 were first announced, we decided to perform a thorough self-assessment before undergoing the independent examination,” said Mark Jacobson, CEO of NetGain Technologies. “We wanted to make sure that we had developed optimized reporting mechanisms and to guarantee that we were following best practices. Once this was done, we gladly applied for and received SOC 2 Type 1 certification. SOC 2 verifies that we have met strict standards when it comes to security, availability of data, processing integrity and confidentiality. Our actions were entirely motivated by a desire to continue providing best-in-class service. I'm happy to say that we achieved this goal.”

NetGain on the Move

Last March, NetGain announced a major expansion, hiring 17 new workers to support Technology OneSource managed IT service. The workers include six new remote systems engineers.
