CA Does D2D for Linux: Translation - Open Source Shops Have Better Backup

By Doug Barney

Linux shops have a new backup option with the announcement of CA ARCserve D2D for Linux.

There are a lot of acronyms in that little phrase, so let’s let MSP Today decipher it a bit.

CA ARCserve is a backup legacy, having been in the market for decades. But in keeping up with the times, the tool adapts to new environments and techniques. The D2D, meanwhile, stands for disk-to-disk where a primary storage device, such as a file server, backs up to a backup server that is disk-based.

This is a huge advance over tape, which is unreliable, slow and a beast to manage. Oh, and tape is non-linear to boot!

D2D is increasingly popular because hard drives are increasing larger, cheaper and faster.

The new CA tool is riding on this trend, as well as the continuing popularity of Linux.

Aimed at both backup and disaster recovery, itself really is just a higher form of backup, CA ARCserve D2D works on an image-based level, so it captures the full environment, not just the data.

One partner is already on board. “Long periods of downtime or data loss can have a devastating impact on businesses who are already struggling to keep up with their ever-changing IT environment,” noted Jindrich Rosicka, technical director at IS4 Technologies, an IT solutions and services provider based in the Czech Republic. “CA ARCserve D2D for Linux has the speed and reliability that our customers need to meet their demanding business requirements. We also plan to use the solution to protect our own Linux servers.”

A U.K.-based service provider is likewise smitten. “Our customers need fast, cost-effective backup software that is easy-to-use and delivers true business value," said Stephen Lawlor, senior storage and virtualization consultant at Cristie Data Ltd. “We were extremely pleased with how CA ARCserve D2D for Linux performed during rigorous testing in a Centos environment. It worked flawlessly and intuitively with each and every restoration scenario we threw at it – while also offering superior value.”
