'Cloud in a Box' Lets You Look Before You Leap

'Cloud in a Box' Lets You Look Before You Leap

By Doug Barney

Your CEO is all over you to start moving stuff to the cloud. Your IT staff is falling apart at the seams with ever-complex on-premises gear and apps to maintain.

You know you want to move at least some applications, but are afraid they won’t work, will be too slow, or just not be the same.

iTrinegy says it has the answer to IT and MSPs woes. As part of the company’s IT Transformation service, it now has what it cleverly calls ‘Cloud in a Box.’

iTrinegy already has a network emulation appliance that can be used for proof of concept for cloud apps. It directly mimics your on-premises environment in the cloud to see how that infrastructure will perform in the hands of a service provider. Large shops can use the appliance to feel out potential providers. And MSPs can use it to demonstrate how exactly their apps will perform on their network.

The new 'Cloud in a Box' is a pre-deployment service that does much the same thing, letting customers themselves see precisely how their applications will behave in the cloud, and test apps against multiple cloud providers. The service will detail issues with the network that could negatively impact the app running in the cloud.

The vendor says customers nudged it in this direction. “We were increasingly being brought into a customer site after their applications have been moved to the new network (cloud) to look at performance issues. Experience shows that applications that have been developed for a LAN can be very poor performing when moved to a WAN type environment like the cloud,” said Frank Puranik, product director at iTrinegy. “When spending money it's smart to know exactly what will happen to your business applications prior to actual deployment, as retrospective remedial actions can cost companies hundreds or even thousands of pounds and damage reputations. Now we can de-risk these cloud moves in advance and so ensure the transition goes smoothly.”

iTrinegy argues that many IT shops just wing it when moving to the cloud, that  pre-deployment testing was too hard and too expensive since shops had to build a physical facsimile of their current network.

'Cloud in a box,' as a service, is a virtual representation of that network.

“The reconstruction of any real world network in a safe but highly realistic test environment ensures that the applications being built or deployed into the cloud can be thoroughly tested to ensure that they will perform well under all the adverse (or good) conditions experienced in a real customer cloud networked environment,” the company argued.

TMC’s Rich Tehrani did a video interview with Nora Murphy, global sales manager at iTrinegy, about network emulation.
