Managed Service Provider News Roundup

Managed Service Provider News Roundup

By Laura Stotler

Some major deals amounting to millions of dollars were unveiled recently in the cloud and managed service provider (MSP) space. Large acquisitions and venture capital announcement lend gravitas to the entire managed services movement and also reveal some large established tech players dipping their toes further into the fray.

Not long ago, we discussed SolarWinds $120 million acquisition of remote monitoring and management (RMM) company N-able. The deal was recently finalized, but also saw a surprise upset from LabTech, which is going after the new company's MSP partners. The company is playing on the uncertainty of the SolarWinds deal to try to lure away partners to work with them, assuring companies that they will remain loyal and committed to their partners.

Speaking of big companies making a push in the cloud arena, Adobe did just that with its acquisition of New York-based startup company Thumb Labs. The company specializes in mobile applications design, and will help Adobe in its push into the cloud storage and use market. The acquisition will further Adobe's Creative Cloud project, which also had the company acquiring $150 million for Behance in December.

Apparently, venture capitalists are getting savvier to the promise of the cloud and managed services. Numescent, which touts a technology known as cloudpaging, received $13.6 million from a team of venture capitalists led by T-Venture. The technology is a new type of applications virtualization, in which existing packaged apps are turned into a service and may be streamed from the cloud.

Skyhigh Networks, which offers cloud visibility and discovery services, received an undisclosed Series B funding round. The company aims to help IT pros find all the cloud services in use in their organization so they can appropriately manage and secure them. The company is supported by bigwigs like Cisco and Gartner, which chose them as a "cool company" in the security services space.
