Cisco Integrates Video Streaming Capabilities from Indian MSP Apalya Technologies

By Laura Stotler

The Cisco Videoscape architecture has been enhanced with an integrated Video Delivery Platform from managed service provider (MSP) Apalya Technologies Private Ltd. The MSP offers video streaming geared toward telecom operators, handset manufacturers and content owners.

Cisco also announced it had made an investment in India-based Apalya as a demonstration to its presence in the region. The company is committed to offering solutions to Indian multi-system operators (MSOs), who operate multiple cable or direct-broadcast satellite television systems. The investment was made in tandem with existing investors IDGVI, IUVP and Qualcomm.

Global mobile data traffic is expected to grow 13-fold from 2012 to 2017, according to the Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI). It will reach 11.2 exabytes per month by 2017, with mobile video comprising 66 percent of total mobile data traffic. In India alone, video will grow from 15 percent of mobile data traffic at the end of 2011 to 40 percent by 2016, according to Cisco. Growth will be driven by the significant uptake of 3G services in the region as well as the introduction of 4G services and a major demand for data and video mobile services.

The Apalya Video Delivery Platform is based on Cisco's Videoscape architecture, and optimizes content so that it is suitable for viewing on all types and sizes of screens. It also integrates with content from mobile operators, content owners and mobile advertisers to create new revenue streams all across the new media value chain.

"Video is a key priority for Cisco, and we have been investing in innovative technologies to enhance the delivery of quality video content across platforms," said Vish Iyer, director of SP Video Architecture, Asia Pacific, Japan and Greater China, Cisco. "With capabilities across cloud, networks and clients, the integrated Cisco Videoscape and Apalya solution will enable MSOs to efficiently manage over-the-top content by taking advantage of their existing one/two way HFC infrastructure to deliver an improved video on demand services to consumers. This will help them monetize their infrastructure and generate new revenue streams in the post digitization era."

"As the shift towards viewing video content on mobile is gaining momentum, we need to invest in solutions that can enhance the quality of the content, without making it too expensive for consumers," said Vamshi Krishna, CEO and founder of Apalya. "Our endeavor would be to gain competitive advantage in the LTE era while continuing our focus on 2.5G / 3G users,” Vamshi added.
