Aternity for VDI Ensures Performance for Virtual Desktops

By David Delony

Desktop virtualization has emerged as a way for enterprise businesses to manage the complexity of the various desktops they server, but it can be hard to see what users are actually doing with these systems, which compounds performance issues.

That’s where Aternity for VDI comes in.

“End user experience is a key factor in determining the success of a VDI project," said Trevor Matz, president and CEO of Aternity. "By equipping enterprises with comprehensive visibility into application performance as experienced by their end users, Aternity is empowering enterprises and their service providers with the insight and confidence required to successfully deliver on their VDI projects."

Aternity for VDI tracks the host execution time, the amount of time a virtualized application spends processing a transaction, the host availability, how much capacity a virtual desktop has to perform a task, the infrastructure legacy, the amount of time a virtualized desktop takes to receive a response from the network and the various servers it used.

Aternity also offers virtual desktop migration planning, identifying which users can benefit the most from virtual desktops, based on the way they actually use their systems and the kinds of applications they run.

The software features virtual desktop impact analysis, which traces problems in performance to the hypervisors.Other features include SLA management, which makes sure companies with Service Levels Agreements meet them by ensuring a minimum level of performance.

Aternity VDI also features user-centric proactive management, meaning administrators can troubleshoot and fix performance problems, often with the users being unaware that they have a problem.

“Desktop virtualization provides enterprises across all industries with significant advantages in flexibility, security, and service delivery," said Bernd Harzog, analyst at The Virtualization Practice. "At the same time VDI initiatives also raise new challenges in planning, managing and troubleshooting that legacy application performance monitoring tools are not suited for."
