Cloud Storage Service Subscriptions Increase to $500 Million for 2012

Cloud storage service providers are enjoying growth in user subscriptions and are expecting up to half a billion subscriptions this year alone. Market research firm IHS (News - Alert) Isuppli recorded less than 300 million user subscriptions from 2011 and predicts that subscriptions for cloud storage services are expected to increase by up to 625 million by next year.

In a world growing increasingly dependent on mobile devices, the demand for cloud services such as cloud storage is overwhelming and companies are scrambling to cap off their share of the market with cloud storage products and services.

The boom in the current cloud storage service market has acted as a stimulant for dozens of providers to enter the market. Companies of all shapes and sizes are throwing their hats into the ring, including Google, Amazon, Apple, and Microsoft (News - Alert); and independent smaller-sized companies such as Dropbox, Synplicity, Mozy and Barracuda, to name a few.

Apple’s offering enables its consumers to purchase, access and store content on its cloud storage service called iCloud, which can be deployed on all Apple (News - Alert) devices the user owns, allowing for information to be synced between devices. Amazon’s Cloud Drive and Google Drive operate in a similar fashion.

Recent companies to jump onto the bandwagon include Dell, which teamed up with cloud storage service provider Nirvanix to develop the Dell (News - Alert) Cloud Storage with Nirvanix service. The service is being marketed as a public, multitenant cloud storage that provides users with the ability to integrate online access storage with third party storage processes. It is billed based on a monthly storage volume.

Competition in the cloud storage service industry is fierce amongst companies vying to be a top contender. In the long run, those at the top will be providers that offer a wide array of cloud service and storage solutions which support different mobile devices and content, offer efficient storage security, and address additional cloud computing needs of consumers to enhance online experience.
