Big Data Driving Need for Cloud Development and Adoption

Large, unstructured data derived from the mass amounts of web logs, social media and other sources are driving the need for cloud services among enterprises, according to a new industry report.

Over half of all developers – 55.4 percent – active in development for cloud platforms said that the need to manage large data sets that cannot be handled on traditional database systems and is a major driver for the use of cloud services, according to Evans Data’s recently released survey of over 400 developers developing for or in the cloud.

Big data, or large, unstructured data sets that may measure in petabytes, exabytes, or beyond, is giving developers new insights into businesses and is an “ideal candidate” for the cloud where scalability and infrastructure are featured, according to Janel Garvin (News - Alert), CEO of Evans Data.

“Cloud service providers have to realize the need to provide specific tools to developers in their Cloud environments,” Garvin said. “Those tools should include ones designed to handle Big Data, as the scalability and cost effectiveness of the cloud paradigm are particularly cogent when related to big data.”

In addition, over 60 percent of developers working with big data in the cloud said the most important components for implementing services that allow for management of big data are integration tools. Security tools were the next most commonly cited components for big data in the cloud.

In related news, Symantec (News - Alert) Corp. recently introduced an add-on solution for Symantec’s Cluster File System that allows customers to run big data analytics on their current infrastructure by making it highly available and manageable, TMCnet reported.

By assisting analyze data for business insights, Apache Hadoop offers users considerable value to drive revenue. But various existing data solutions lack the data management abilities and built-in resilience to tackle the expense and complexity of increasing storage and server sprawl.

The new Symantec Enterprise Solution for Hadoop offering offers a scalable, resilient data management solution to administer big data workloads to help make Apache Hadoop ready for enterprise deployment by working closely with Hortonworks.
