NTT Reorganizes in America, Reinforces Presence in Asia/Pacific

New York City-based NTT America (News - Alert), a global IT infrastructure services provider, won an award for improvements to its own facilities and has reorganized to further enhance services to customers. Its parent company, NTT Communications (News - Alert) Corporation, has opened new data centers in the Asia/Pacific region.

As enterprise cloud demand continues to grow in parallel with customers’ interest in global connectivity to support large scale cloud deployments, NTT America has combined a base of worldwide public and private networks, more than 30 strategically placed data centers and a VMware vCloud- powered cloud computing architecture to satisfy market needs.

Last week, NTT America and El Cerrito, Cali.-based Vigilent, a provider of intelligent energy management systems, jointly won the prestigious 2012 Green Enterprise IT (GEIT) Award. The GEIT Awards showcase organizations that pioneer energy-efficiency improvements in their IT and data center organizations. The award will be presented to Vigilent and NTT Communications at the seventh annual Uptime Institute Symposium in Santa Clara, California, taking place May 14-17, 2012 at the Santa Clara Convention Center.

The companies will be recognized for Facility Product Deployment, which highlights facility infrastructure products that significantly improve data center energy and resource efficiency. Using the Vigilent system to provide dynamic, intelligent cooling optimization, NTT Communications has dramatically improved energy efficiency at its two largest North American data centers.

The platform “virtualizes” cooling operations by dynamically shifting loads from inefficient and rarely deployed cooling units to more heavily provisioned cooling equipment for greater energy efficiency in real-time balance with changing IT loads. In addition to easily measurable carbon footprint reductions, the Vigilent system HAS improved uptime control at both facilities.

NTT America expects to reduce its electricity consumption in North America by over 7.6 million kilowatt hours (kWh) and carbon emissions by 8.8 million pounds annually, saving the company a projected $630,000 annually in energy costs.

“NTT Communications is honored to be recognized for our innovative approach to reducing the amount of energy required to cool our data centers,” said vice president Tarif Abboushi.

Business Unit Realignment

As of February 1, the company created the Global Solutions Business Unit to merge the Data Center Services and Global IP Network Business Units.  The newly named Global Solutions Business Unit is responsible for all NTT America products sold domestically and internationally, as well as NTT Group company services, including Dimension Data (News - Alert), NTT Data and Integralis.

Michael DeVito has been promoted to executive vice president to run this business unit, while Doug McMaster will oversee the Data Center Services Business Unit in his role as vice president.  This restructuring is designed to provide customers with the flexibility of an expanded product set, combined with the ability to integrate across all NTT Group company global resources, creating a custom solution that best meets their needs.

“The expectations from our global customers reflect both our continuing focus on integrated enterprise cloud implementations and our ability to refocus our business units to meet those expectations in a way that is flexible and efficient for companies,” said Kazuhiro Gomi (News - Alert), president and CEO, NTT America.  “We will continue to leverage the infrastructure assets of the NTT Communications portfolio and the global resources of other NTT Group companies to keep our customers competitive and up-to-date from a business and technology perspective.”

From May 14 through 16 in Chicago, NTT America will participate in International Telecoms Week (ITW). At the annual ITW conference, NTT America will join more than 1,700 companies in the wholesale Internet community for discussions and networking on key issues, including LATAM market growth and supporting increased broadband demands for providers and content networks.

Two New Asia/Pacific Centers

Finally, on April 27, NTT America’s parent company, NTT Communications Corporation, a world leader in providing ICT services, announced the official inauguration of its Singapore Serangoon Data Center and its Malaysia Cyberjaya 3 Data Center.

The two facilities, NTT Com’s first self-designed-and-built data centers outside Japan, are the company’s fourth and fifth facility in Singapore and the third in Malaysia. They will provide key support for NTT Com’s ongoing expansion in the fast-growing Asia/Pacific region, where the company already operates data centers in 13 countries.

Singapore Serangoon Data Center is located in northeastern Singapore. The tier III+ data center offers co-location, cloud services, NTT Com’s global network services and other related services. Key features are specifically designed to cater to companies in the financial, information technology, and manufacturing sectors. The data center is connected directly to the Asia Submarine-cable Express (ASE)—NTT Com’s new undersea cable offering high-speed, high-reliability network environment between Singapore and other Asian locations, including Japan.

The facility hosts 2,500 racks in a total server room area measuring 5,000 square meters. Investment in the facility is about 12.4 billion JPY (approximately US$155 million).

"HOYA chose the Singapore Serangoon Data Center’s highly reliable and flexible network environment to serve as an Asian hub for the company’s globally shared ICT platform,” said Yoshio Chikayasu, CIO of HOYA, a Japanese multinational med-tech company and the leading supplier of innovative precision products based on its optics technologies. “NTT Com is the ideal partner to help us expand our global operations because it provides total ICT services, from networks and data centers to clouds and applications, all on a seamless, end-to-end, one-stop basis."

"We warmly welcome NTT Communications’ decision to construct its first self-designed and built green data center outside of Japan here in Singapore," said Jayson Goh, executive director of Infocomms and Media for The Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB). "NTT Communications’ latest data center will add to the vibrancy of the infocomms ecosystem here and further reinforce Singapore’s position as a global data management hub."

Singapore Serangoon Data Center has been fully operational since the end of February. Malaysia Cyberjaya 3 Data Center, started operation on April 26.
