IT Risk Management: Securing the Cloud and the Enterprise

Security is one of the foremost considerations – if not the most important one – when it comes to cloud computing. At the speed in which data is growing globally, businesses are tasked with many windows of opportunity for their most valuable assets to be taken by hackers, among other threats that face enterprises today.

But a new service may change all of that. On Feb. 1, security-as-a-service vendor CloudPassage will roll out its cloud security application for businesses known as Halo Netsec, which features a firewall, two-factor authentication and intrusion-detection capabilities.

The application runs a small security daemon (in this case, just 3MB) on a virtual server, which handles communications across CloudPassage’s computing grid, in which all traffic passes on its way from the endpoint to the host, and vice versa, eWeek reported.

“The small footprint of the security daemon makes it easy to set it up on a virtual server, without impacting performance – and, in most cases, associated hosting costs,” the report said.

CloudPassage founder and CEO Carson Sweet told eWeek that the company is not just offering a piece of the security pie – they can provide full firewall management with Netsec.

“When people look at adding security to a cloud system, they generally think they're buying a slice of something,” Sweet said. “So now we’re doing full-blown dynamic firewall management, and it’s multi-cloud.”

Halo NetSec solves the biggest challenge of moving into the public cloud: by providing an elastic security perimeter around cloud servers that allows key server access and network security controls that are normally only available through a private data center.

CloudPassage offers three Halo subscription plans. The basic plan provides security capabilities for free, on up to 25 servers. The NetSec and professional packages add several features to Halo Basic.

By upgrading you can integrate into automated operational environments, enable advanced security features for compliance and other business needs, and protect an unlimited number of servers. In terms of pricing, Halo NetSec runs at 3.5 cents per server-hour – or $15 per month for 100 servers.
